What is this Handbook about?

This Handbook is done by Hampali Traders, it’s a dry chilli trading firm from Karnataka. Shri Nagappa ji Hampali is the founder of Hampali Traders, he started dry chilli trading from 1968 by selling at roadside, he used to trade Local Byadgi. In initial days Shri Nagappa ji being a small trader had less financial capacity so purchase power was less, but at his small scale also he had high financial disciple – paying farmer right on time. Farmer community liked his financial disciple and supported him with longer time credit line, thus his trading firm started to flourish.

To give back, Hampali Traders started branding this Local Byadgi from 2018, every year we make Handbook which gives detailed insight of crop area, prices, lab reports, data science etc.

Hubli, which is located in Karnataka is known for growing Byadgi/KDL variety popularly known as Local. Local Byadgi has highest colour value among chillies, upto 270 ASTA. It is grown organically in traditional way which gives it up to 18-24 months shelf life and good aroma. Major areas are Kundgol and Annigeri. Sowing starts in June and harvest is from November to March.

Crop Sowing Report

2020 - 21 2021 - 22
Sowed Area Total area under chili cultivation is 25%, this year farmers have opted cotton on 50% area. Total area under chilli cultivation is 30%, Farmer’s have opted for Moong and Cotton.
Varieties KDL/Byadgi 90% area Byadgi/KDL is 80% area and Syngenta-2043 is 10% area.
Climate effect Due to excessive rain about 50-60% of crop is affected This year 25-30% crop loss. But yield was of low quality.
Arrivals Date December 3rd week, 2020 January 1st week, 2021

Every year we make crop report to help our customer’s SUCCEED. we visit fields continuously from July to November. During our visit we check crop health, climatic condition, soil moisture which helps us to predict crop yield.

For year 2020-21

Check image from left to right, this is pictorial representation of diseases attack. This disease is attaching chili when it is in fruit stage, the output chili will be completely white. Unseasoned rain at Hubli-Kundgol area in month of october had a negative effect and yield was reduced to one third.

For year 2021-22

Untimely cyclone rainfall during november month had a negative effect on crop.

Byadgi Chilli Prices in 2021-22

2021-22 Summarised

  • Crop area increased by 30-40% due to interest from new area farmers.
  • Yield was more than double compared with last year.
  • About 30-35% of yield was of low quality due to cyclone in month of november, last year low quality was about 20%.
